Augmented Reality Assisted System for Cultural Tourism – ARTIST

Pedro Branco, Cyblix Unipessoal Lda.

The Augmented Reality Assisted System for Cultural Tourism (ARTIST) is a Galileo-enabled augmented reality tool designed for the cultural tourism market. ARTIST’s end users will be able to walk around cultural sites and receive value-added information like informative texts, 3D drawings, or sketches. The tool is also able to display how a site looked in the past and related historical events via an AR interface. Its concept is based on the usage of augmented reality and 3D technologies that were originally used for game development.

The precise positioning delivered by Galileo is an essential element of ARTIST since it enables the accurate localisation of the end user.

CatSla – Accelerating the Advent of Safe & Eco-Friendly Cat-Owning

Tatjana Weiss

Lost cats are three times less likely to return than dogs, and statistics show they are highly likely to be killed by traffic. Cats are not only victims, however; they are also predators. Pet cats are the number-one human-caused threat to wildlife. So far, they have been involved in the extinction of 148 species. CatSla offers safe and eco-friendly services to keep birds and other small animals safe, including protected species. The solution will tackle these problems and not only reduce the danger for protected species and small animals, but also help save cats’ lives. CatSla’s automatic system, which is based on Galileo localisation and data extraction, makes it possible for cats to avoid both dangerous areas and wildlife sanctuaries while causing no harm to cats or their environment.

Safe Passage: Charting the Uncharted to Save Lives

Malcom Macdonald

Safe Passage is a nautical mapping and routing service powered from space that makes hazardous tidal regions safe to navigate. Globally, there are over 13 million hectares of tidal flats (that’s roughly the size of Greece) that are the largest constituent of today’s uncharted waters. Tidal flats provide natural coastal defences, resources, and arenas for outdoor leisure for around 2.5 billion people. Because of their dynamic and changing nature, tidal flats remain uncharted and unsafe to navigate. Safe Passage offers frequent, automated mapping for safe access and navigation in tidal zones. The service ensures frequent nautical chart updates independent of cloud cover. Its proprietary algorithm detects changes between images and automatically identifies changes in navigable channel locations. On this basis, Safe Passage generates navigation routes for smartphones and digital navigation systems to ensure safe routing.

The Challenge

The gaming and leisure markets are constantly growing and becoming an important part of our lives as wearables are more common and location-based applications are supporting a wide variety of leisure activities. GNSS today enables the monitoring of users’ performance through a variety of fitness applications. Satellite navigation also helps make augmented reality games even more immersive, providing the players with high accuracy and availability even in areas with no phone coverage or Internet. With Galileo and EGNOS services, there is space for new ideas that need positioning information that is accurate and reliable.

The ideas proposed should be focused on the development of applications introducing space data in the areas of:

  • Gaming
  • Sport
  • Leisure
  • Tourism

The solutions should also consider synergies with other emerging technologies: augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), algorithms and tools to allow data sharing and data usage.
