GSA :: The most promising EGNOS application idea

Starting Position Objectives Prizes

Starting Position

The European GNSS Agency (GSA), a European Union agency, works with the European Commission on a range of activities aimed at helping European entrepreneurs and businesses - especially high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), business incubators, and related networks - take commercial advantage of EGNOS and Galileo. Such marketing and promotional activities help ensure that European industry maintains a competitive edge in the global satellite navigation marketplace.

EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) is Europe's first venture into satellite navigation. It augments GPS and makes it suitable for safety-critical applications. The EGNOS satellite signal currently provides corrections and integrity information on GPS, and will do the same in the future for Galileo. Galileo, meanwhile, is a European global navigation satellite system that provides an accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control.

Objectives

GNSS is an enabling technology used in many different sectors. GSA promotes the development of applications that create demand for the GNSS systems EGNOS and Galileo while providing economic and social benefits. Now it is time to fully exploit the potential of applications based on European GNSS. We are looking for innovative ideas for satellite navigation applications and will rank them based on the following criteria:

  • Technical / operational feasibility, maturity of the idea
  • Benefits / market potential
  • Innovation compared to current solutions
  • Contribution to EGNOS and Galileo adoption
  • Use of the EGNOS Software Development Kit*
*) EGNOS developers are invited to use the EGNOS Software Development Kit (SDK):

Prize

The winner of the prize will have the opportunity to realise the idea at a suitable incubation centre of their choice within the EU27 for six months, with the option of an additional six months based on evaluation after the first period.

The award criteria will be the uniqueness and originality of the idea, its business (and social) potential, the credibility of the corresponding team, and the application’s use of unique EGNOS/Galileo features.
