University of Porto

With origins dating back to the 18th century, the University of Porto is currently the largest educational and research institution in Portugal. The exceptional variety of courses the university offers at its 14 faculties and business school cover the entire spectrum of study areas and levels of higher education. With 69 research units, the University of Porto is responsible for over 20% of the Portuguese articles indexed each year in the ISI Web of Science. Over half of its research units were classified as "excellent" or "very good" by the latest international evaluations. In fact, the University of Porto has some of the most productive and internationally renowned R&D centres in Portugal. In recent years, the university has been focusing on providing greater economic value through its scientific production, and burgeoning partnerships with Portuguese industry leaders have already resulted in several innovations that have proven successful in the national and international markets.

UPIN, University of Porto Innovation – the university’s technology transfer office – provides support to the University of Porto community through R&D and innovation funding programmes, the application of R&D findings and resulting entrepreneurship, and its role as a university-industry liaison.

UPTEC, the Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, seeks to provide a setting where businesses and academia can come together and leverage skills to their mutual benefit. The resulting environment is highly conducive to innovation and the foundation of creative, technology-based businesses. Through its concentration of a large number of start-ups and private R&D centres around the University of Porto, UPTEC enhances the socioeconomic aspects of the Porto region.
