Call for safety and security in the logistics and transport sectors

Oberpfaffenhofen, 22 July 2010: The Forum for Applied Satellite Navigation and Mobile IT Baden-Württemberg e. V. (Forum SatNav MIT BW) believes in the enormous economic potential satellite navigation presents, especially for Baden-Württemberg. By sponsoring a special topic prize for security-relevant solutions in the transport and logistics sector in line with the European Satellite Navigation Competition 2010, Forum SatNav MIT BW seeks market-ready submissions from companies, universities, and research institutes that create value in logistics by means of applications in satellite navigation and mobile IT. Doing so requires both innovations and improvements to existing solutions.

The forum focuses on the development of applications and services based on navigation, information and communication technologies. In particular, it seeks to support small and medium-sized companies in launching innovative products and services as well as in the creation of strategic alliances, cooperations and partnerships. Submissions to be shortlisted should:

  • involve an innovative solution, application, and/or process from the areas of satellite navigation and mobile IT
  • be market-ready and oriented along the value chain
  • feature either an enhancement of an existing solution or a radical innovation

In 2009 the award went to Klaus Rieck of KLR Consult GbR for his solution "Galileo GeoSeal" - an innovation that uses dynamic anti-spoofing codes guaranteed and verified by a Galileo GeoSeal centre to contain the spread of counterfeit or potentially dangerous goods.

The winner of the 2010 call for safety and security in the logistics and transport sectors will be awarded more than just one prize:

The first prize will be the chance to present his/her idea at the fifth National Galileo User Conference staged by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development in Stuttgart on 3rd of November 2010. The winner will also get a free two years membership in the Forum for applied satellite navigation and mobile IT as well as a business coaching, in which the Forum will establish the contact to a venture capitalist for the winner. Last but not least the winner will get a small prize pool full of software licenses of software developed by members of the forum (for example a developer license of the software sphinx open by in-integrierte informationssysteme GmbH (www.in-gmbh.de) with a value of 5800 € or a license of the software TourExplorer and MagicMaps2Go by MagicMaps GmbH (www.magicmaps.de) with a value of 200 €).

Participation to the prize is open until 31 July 2010 at http://galileo-masters.eu/index.php?anzeige=special_prizes_satnav-bawu.html

About the European Satellite Navigation Competition

The European Satellite Navigation Competition is an international innovation contest that awards the best ideas for applications in satellite navigation. The competition has been organised by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO) since 2004 and is oriented toward companies, entrepreneurs, research institutes, universities and private individuals. As part of the competition, AZO has established a network that has since expanded to 23 regions worldwide. The network connects technology hubs and companies that boast some of the most important players in the fields of incubation, prototype and product development, market development, and idea management for applications related to satellite navigation. Meanwhile, aerospace clusters and other regional initiatives involved in the network give entrepreneurs crucial access to potential partners and investors.

Having begun with three partner regions, this year's ESNC will be held in 23 high-tech regions all over the world: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Nice / Sophia Antipolis, Prague, South Holland, Madrid, Lombardy, Australia, Taiwan, Great Britain, Øresund, Gipuzkoa, Valencia, Switzerland, and Israel as well as newcomers Lithuania, Aquitaine, USA, Brazil and the Arab Middle East & North Africa (MENA).

The ESNC intends to further strengthen international collaboration among these regions, particular with regard to the development of applications and services made possible by Galileo, Europe's satellite navigation system. The competition is held under the patronage of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and is supported by the European BIC Network (EBN). The main winners of the ESNC - the GALILEO Master, the special topic prize winners, and the 23 regional winners - will be recognised at a state reception to be held at the Munich Residenz on 18 October 2010.
