Everyday security for the elderly
T-Systems to award innovation project to best eHealth solution based on satellite positioning

Oberpfaffenhofen, 15.07.2009: Our ageing society needs services that make everyday living easier and offer more security to the growing number of elderly people. This includes, for example, enabling the ill, disabled, or elderly to live in their usual surroundings, but with the assurance of being under medical observation.

T-Systems, the corporate-customer unit of Deutsche Telekom, provides integrated IT and communications solutions that are tailored for use in healthcare. This benefits hospitals, doctors' practices, associations, health insurance companies, other service providers - and most of all, patients.

Ambient assisted living, eHealth, remote monitoring, and wearable technologies are some of the buzzwords dedicated to this subject. Common to virtually all of them is the requisite ability to determine a person's location in order to provide targeted assistance in case of emergency. This is often achieved by implementing satellite navigation technology in combination with mobile communications.

As part of the European Satellite Navigation Competition 2009 - an international competition that rewards ideas for new applications in satellite navigation - T-Systems is looking for solutions based on satellite positioning that provide the elderly or disabled with increased safety and confidence in their everyday lives, regardless of their location. The creator of the best concept will have the chance to bring it to fruition in a joint innovation project with T-Systems. The applications submitted should focus on user-friendliness and comprise a complete system of hardware and software. Particular consideration will be given to those that are cost-effective and part of a sustainable, innovative business model.

Companies and innovators anywhere in the world are welcome to participate. The online database at https://esnc.galileo-masters.com will be open for submissions until July 31, 2009.

The solutions submitted will be evaluated - confidentially, of course - by T-Systems experts from August to September. The winner will be recognised at an awards ceremony to be held at the Munich Residenz on October 21, 2009. In addition to the T-Systems special topic prize, participants have the opportunity to compete for one of 17 regional prizes, as well as for the competition's grand prize of €20,000.

Facts and data on the European Satellite Navigation Competition

The European Satellite Navigation Competition is an international innovation contest that awards the best ideas for applications in satellite navigation. The competition has been organised by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen since 2004 and is oriented toward companies, entrepreneurs, research institutes, universities, and private individuals. Having begun with three partner regions, this year's ESNC will be held in 17 high-tech regions all over the world: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Nice / Sophia Antipolis, Prague, South Holland, Madrid, Lombardy, Australia, Taiwan, and Great Britain, as well as newcomers Øresund, Gipuzkoa, Switzerland, and Israel.

The ESNC is intended to further strengthen international collaboration among these regions, particular with regard to the development of applications and services made possible by the European satellite navigation system Galileo. The competition is held under the patronage of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and is supported by Messe München GmbH. The main winners of the ESNC - the GALILEO Master, the special prize winners, and the 17 regional winners - will be recognised at a state reception to be held at the Munich Residenz on October 21, 2009.
