The Application Center for Satellite Navigation Oberpfaffenhofen Enters Long-Term Cooperation with NAVTEQ

Oberpfaffenhofen, June 16, 2009: The Application Center for Satellite Navigation Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO) has signed a three-year co-marketing agreement with NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of digital map, traffic and location data for in-vehicle, portable, wireless and enterprise solutions. The two parties intend to work together on advancing innovations in the field of satellite navigation and location-based services (LBS) and on supporting developers with joint incubation activities.

The aim is to stimulate new application ideas for enhancements to life and business, using location-aware features, and help bring them to market.

AZO has at its disposal a strong network of companies, academia, research institutions, inventors, government agencies and other European organisations that promote application development in the field of satellite navigation, particularly with regard to the future satellite navigation system, Galileo.

NAVTEQ has a strong foothold in the geospatial community and vast resources to support LBS development. Through NAVTEQ Network for Developers™ (NN4D), a dynamic online portal and global community, the company provides the support developers need in technical and entrepreneurial issues, thereby enabling them to cultivate, present, and bring to market the most innovative location-based solutions.

Since 2003, NAVTEQ has held the annual NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge®, which awards the best location-based services for mobile devices. In 2004, AZO organised the first European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC), which has since annually recognised the best ideas for applications in satellite navigation and attracted broad interest from among others in the aerospace industry. By linking these highly complementary industry networks and leading competitions together, AZO and NAVTEQ aim to accelerate innovation.

Networked application competitions
By offering a new special topic prize for the ESNC, NAVTEQ is looking to bridge the gap between ideas and functional applications. "The aim is that the European Satellite Navigation Competition helps surface the best ideas for new LBS applications and the NAVTEQ Global LBS Challenge serves as the realization phase of these ideas. The Global LBS Challenge has an excellent track record of providing contestants with industry exposure to key decision-makers from operators and handset manufacturers and many of the semi-finalists have received venture capital funding or launched commercially-distributed applications as a direct result of the competition," says Marc Naddell, vice president, Partner & Developer Programs at NAVTEQ.

"Location-based services accounted for two thirds of all entries to last year's European Satellite Navigation Competition. The strategic collaboration with NAVTEQ will further enhance our capacities to support the contestants in developing and realising their ideas in this most relevant sector of satellite navigation applications", adds Thorsten Rudolph, Managing Director of AZO.

Ideas for applications in location-based services and other fields can be submitted online at www.galileo-masters.eu until July 31, 2009.

To support the new initiative, a partner area for AZO has been launched on NN4D including information on support programs, the ESNC, success stories, ESNC events, regional contacts and the NAVTEQ special topic prize. The incubator program and the annual competition are methods by which support is given to developers that bring innovation into the ecosystem.

Facts and data on the European Satellite Navigation Competition
The European Satellite Navigation Competition is an international innovation contest that awards the best ideas for applications in satellite navigation. The competition has been organised by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen since 2004 and is oriented toward companies, entrepreneurs, research institutes, universities, and private individuals. Having begun with three partner regions, this year's ESNC will be held in 17 high-tech regions all over the world: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Nice / Sophia Antipolis, Prague, South Holland, Madrid, Lombardy, Australia, Taiwan, and Great Britain, as well as newcomers Øresund, Gipuzkoa, Switzerland, and Israel.

The ESNC is intended to further strengthen international collaboration among these regions, particular with regard to the development of applications and services made possible by the European satellite navigation system Galileo. The competition is held under the patronage of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and is supported by Messe München GmbH. The main winners of the ESNC - the GALILEO Master, the special prize winners, and the 17 regional winners - will be recognised at a state reception to be held at the Munich Residenz on October 21, 2009.
